skype fax

by Matt Gerchow
Are you thinking you want to fax from Skype?
Me too. I have been a loyal Skype user for over SIX years now. Mostly because I spend a lot of time traveling.
I've researched this and I'd like to give you my concise findings on this subject.
Skype - Skype is an online phone service that provides VoIP phone calls between computers and landlines.
Here's how Skype works…
With the invention of the internet, we also received a new technology known as VOIP or Voice Over Internet Protocol.
Where old analog lines were expensive, connecting points on the Internet was much cheaper, and even free once the network was built.
VoIP has the ability to move much more than voice. It can also move text, images, data, live video and various media files.
Skype brought class and style to the VOIP world. Before Skype, most companies providing VOIP felt like buying long-distance calling cards.
Skype sends messages differently than telephone lines... I'm going to show you how they are different and the work around that I have come up with to make SkypeFax happen...
Skype is great for sending files of pretty much any size. The largest file I've sent so far is 62mb.
Faxes are made up of different data than voice is.
A voice call can lose a little bit of data, like the milliseconds that Skype cuts out.
A fax transmission CANNOT lose any data or an error will occur. The small hiccups along the Skype lines would kill most faxes.
Digital faxes move files across the Internet and then use digital phone lines and protocols to complete the final delivery.
When a fax service company receives an incoming fax, they match the protocol to the sending machine or digital fax number.
I have found RingCentral to be the best accompaniment to Skype. I receive my faxes in my email and so far, no issues.
Over the past two years I have spent more than a month in Thailand, Singapore, the Phillipines, Colombia and the United States. I used my phone-fax combo of Skype and RingCentral everywhere I went.
Here are 5 steps to setup all of your communications to run from the Internet.
Step 1... You have your skype number, so let’s get you an online fax number.
Step 2... You can start a free 30-day trial with RingCentral and they will have you fax capable in the next 2 minutes. Once you have your account, you can then start sending faxes. While not through your Skype communicator, pretty much every email service has the ability to process online faxes.
Step 3... I like using Gmail, fax from anywhere capabilities. All you have to do is click Compose Mail and enter your fax number where you would normally enter an email address. On the back of it, you enter the fax company’s custom fax domain.
In the example below, the rcfax.com stands for ringcentral fax. Like this...
Step 4... Next, you attach any documents or simply type in the text that you want included with your fax. Generally you will have a pre-defined cover sheet that includes your pertinent information.
Step 5... Click send and your fax is on its way. When RingCentral receives your fax, they will reroute it electronically to the number you are trying to send to.
After reading through the process above, you can see that receiving a fax through Skype would be very difficult. Online faxing through email makes a lot more sense.
